How We Formulate

For centuries, African people have used powerful botanicals as traditional healing elixirs. Terres d’Afrique has studied how people use these relatively unknown ingredients and evaluated their potential. The curative, restorative power of many African plants is legendary for a reason. They work, in no uncertain terms.

In crafting our products, we’ve combined these ingredients in potent formulations that maximise their skin care benefits; the culmination of years of exploration, field research and laboratory development.

No animal ingredients, colour additives, synthetic fragrances or any other potentially harmful chemicals are used in Terres d’Afrique products. In instances where the use of a synthetic preservative is completely unavoidable – for instance, to ensure product safety and efficacy - we limit the use strictly to a minimum (less than 0,5%), complementing synthetics with botanical alternatives.

Any synthetic preservatives used in Terres d’Afrique products are guaranteed safe and approved by Ecocert.

In developing our formulations we focused on harnessing antioxidants and essential fatty acids, also known as omegas.

Oxidation and dehydration are the main factors responsible for aging skin. Oxidation, a natural process of the body’s metabolic functions, releases unstable molecules called free radicals. These unstable molecules damage skin cells, collagen and elastin, creating inflammation and wrinkles. Free radicals are created in overdrive when skin is exposed to the sun, environmental pollution and smoke or when we are under stress. Poor diet and lack of sleep can heighten our exposure and susceptibility to free radicals.

Antioxidants are active agents that stop or decrease the speed of oxidation. They work by preventing further damage and assist in restoring skin cells to their normal, healthy state. Vitamin C, vitamin E and Super Oxide-Dismutase are examples of powerful natural antioxidants present in our formulations.

Essential fatty acids – the omegas - are lipids that the body does not produce but that are necessary to maintain the integrity of our cells. These constituents of the cell membrane penetrate deep into the skin; helping to restructure and regenerate damaged cells. Although dietary intake of omegas benefits your general health, they rarely reach the skin. We use a manufacturing procedure and oil matrix that allows incorporation of high levels of omegas 3, 6 and 9 in our products.

Topical application of products high in antioxidants and omegas not only inhibits the negative effects of free radicals and helps restructure and regenerate skin cells, but it also hydrates the skin to assist with the production of collagen and elastin. For this reason, Terres d’Afrique products help maintain healthy skin, prevent aging and improve moisture content.

Organic farming excludes the use of toxic and persistent fertilisers and pesticides, plant growth regulators, sewer sludge and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These farming practices help to sustain a healthy environment and do not deplete resources or impact air and water quality.

‘Certified Organic’ means that the plants used in our products are grown according to these standards. It also means that our methods of extracting the active botanicals, as well as the manufacturing processes and our packaging, are strictly controlled, to avoid any contamination.

Terres d’Afrique has chosen Ecocert - an independent European institution - to certify our products. This guarantees that a minimum of 95% of all plant ingredients used in our products is certified organic and that a minimum of 95% of total ingredients is of natural origin.
